Rain lashed against the windows of Amelia's apartment, mirroring the turmoil inside her. A letter, crisp and official-looking, lay open on her kitchen table. It informed her of a brother, a half-brother she’d never known. Her hand trembled as she refilled her coffee cup for the third time in an hour, the dark liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. The apartment felt too small, the air thick and heavy. She paced, her bare feet cold against the hardwood floor, the echo of her footsteps amplifying the silence. She glanced at the unopened email from him, a simple "Hope to hear from you soon," and abruptly turned away, unable to bring herself to engage with it.
