The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic buzzed a discordant tune that grated on Elias’s nerves. He kept fiddling with the loose thread on his worn denim jacket, picking at it with a ferocity that bordered on obsessive. Waiting rooms always gave him this feeling – a disquiet, a prickling sensation across his skin. He glanced at the other occupants: a coughing elderly woman, a bored teenager scrolling through her phone, a man with a bandage on his arm. None of them seemed particularly perturbed.

A nurse called his name, her voice echoing in the sterile space. He rose, his legs suddenly heavy. As he followed her down the hallway, a sense of dread, cold and clammy, settled in his stomach. The doctor's words from the initial consultation replayed in his head, a constant hum of uncertainty. This rare condition… it was unsettling.

He entered the examining room and saw a woman already seated, looking pale and holding a tissue. Their eyes met, and a flicker of… recognition?… crossed her face. The doctor introduced them, and in that instant, a strange tension filled the room.
