She found herself gripping the worn leather strap of her purse with a white-knuckled intensity. The aroma of antiseptic, thick in the air, did little to soothe her. A bead of sweat trickled down her temple. The diagnosis was shocking, of course, but it was the shared experience, the inherent isolation of it, that had truly shaken her.

The doctor, his face grave, spoke of the rarity, the lack of definitive answers. He mentioned another patient. He had given her a name, a description. Now, here she was. She studied the man across the room, his face etched with a similar… something.

He cleared his throat. "It's… well, it's a lot to take in, isn't it?" His voice was hesitant, unsure. She nodded, unable to speak, the muscles in her jaw suddenly locked tight. The silence stretched, a taut, invisible thread connecting them. It was a shared secret, a shared burden, and suddenly, she wasn't quite sure how to feel.
