The train rattled along the tracks, each metallic screech a painful assault on his already frayed senses. He clutched the worn copy of *Moby Dick* in his hands, but the words swam before his eyes. He couldn't concentrate. He kept glancing at the woman sitting opposite him. She was reading the same book. This coincidence had set off alarms in his head.

He knew she was the one. The same rare condition, the same limited information, the same feeling of disquiet about what the future held. He felt a weird, unsettling feeling, as if the walls of his reality were starting to bend.

Her gaze met his. A brief, almost imperceptible nod. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to flee. He looked at the window, the blur of passing landscapes, as if seeking an escape. But he knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that he couldn't.
