The phone felt heavy in her hand. She stared at the screen, the doctor's number blinking, a constant reminder. The diagnosis had upended her world. The thought of this medical abnormality, something shared, something so… specific… caused her gut to clench.

She had to call him. She’d been putting it off, but now she was scheduled to meet the other patient. She didn't want to. She hated the idea of this. But the doctor insisted that it was crucial, that they needed to compare notes, share experiences.

She pressed the call button. She could hear the phone ringing, the sound amplifying every beat of her racing heart. She closed her eyes.
