The archaeologist, Dr. Anya Sharma, felt a curious hollowness in her stomach as she brushed the dust off the small, ceramic container. The inscription, a series of symbols she didn’t recognize, was etched around its lip. It was buried on the grounds of her childhood home, but she had no memory of its existence.

She carefully lifted the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of dried lavender, was a single, tarnished silver key. Its design was intricate, almost floral, yet undeniably sinister. She ran a thumb over its cold metal, a shiver chasing down her spine.

She tried the key on the front door of the house. It did not fit. She felt a growing unease. The shadows of the trees seemed to lengthen and deepen, and the wind, which had been gentle, now whistled through the branches with a mournful sound.
