She woke up in the middle of the night, heart racing. The image of the demolition crew, imagined, but vivid, filled her mind. The notice about the conversion had left her in a state of constant agitation.

She got out of bed, her legs unsteady. She walked into the living room, where the moonlight cast long shadows. The apartment, usually a haven, now felt like a temporary shelter.

She ran her hand along the wall, touching the worn paint, the familiar texture. A wave of helplessness washed over her, making her body grow cold.
