He slammed the phone down after the landlord confirmed the change. The abruptness of the conversation left him shaken. He walked out onto his balcony, searching for clarity. The city's noise, usually a comforting backdrop, now felt intrusive.

He gripped the railing, his knuckles white. The air felt thin, like he couldn't get enough to breathe. The faces of the people passing on the street blurred together, alien and distant.

He went back inside, locking the door behind him. He didn’t know how to move forward. He felt as though the ground beneath him had shifted.
