The airport felt like a pressure cooker, the noise amplifying with each passing minute. The delays had pushed Sarah's flight back yet again. She chewed on her lip, a nervous habit she’d been trying to break. She was supposed to be in Ireland, at her grandmother's bedside.

She hunched over, wrapping her arms around herself as if to ward off a chill. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to pulse, reflecting the chaotic emotions within her. She tried to distract herself by people-watching, but every interaction felt flat and meaningless.

Her breath hitched in her throat as she reread the text from her mother. Each word was a painful stab in the gut. “She’s fading, honey.”
