He found the note tucked beneath the windshield wiper. “Vehicle towed. Illegally parked.” The words swam before Leo's eyes. He felt a prickle of sweat crawl down his back, even though the air was crisp. Fury warred with a strange, creeping apprehension. He clenched his fists.

His gaze swept the empty space, searching for… something. For an explanation, perhaps. He'd lived here for a decade; surely he knew the parking rules. Didn't he? He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. The asphalt seemed to mock him.

He stormed inside, slamming the door. The familiar scent of home, usually a comfort, now felt stifling. He paced the living room, his agitation growing with each circuit. He grabbed the remote, intending to drown out his unease with the mindless chatter of the television, but found himself unable to focus.
