The silence of the driveway was deafening. Sarah felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. It wasn't the cost; she could handle that. It was the violation, the sense of… something stolen. She ran a hand through her hair, the simple action oddly unsatisfying.

Her apartment, usually her refuge, suddenly felt inadequate. The walls seemed to close in, the air thick with a feeling she couldn't name. She moved restlessly from room to room, unable to settle. She picked up a book, then put it down, the words blurring before her eyes.

She pulled out her phone, scrolling through her contacts, searching for a lifeline. She wanted someone, anyone, to simply tell her everything was alright. But when the call connected to the voicemail of her best friend, the comforting words felt flat, empty.
