The clipboard felt heavy in Maya’s hands. She hadn’t expected to see her name absent from the roster. A cold dread crept up her spine, tightening her chest. She crumpled the paper, the crisp sound strangely loud in the echoing gym. Her carefully planned schedule for the next year – the college visits, the summer training camps – all seemed to crumble with it. She wandered toward the equipment room, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, and kicked a stray volleyball against the wall, the dull thud a poor reflection of the pounding in her own ears.
