Gemotions

The weight of the unopened mail felt heavy in her hands. The card, tucked in the middle, felt heavier still. She could almost feel the eyes on her back as she walked into her apartment. She felt a nervous tic in her eye. She set the mail on the counter, but the card seemed to stare back at her.

She picked it up, trying to swallow the lump in her throat. She looked at it, trying to figure out if she knew the handwriting. She didn't. She didn't know the person who sent it.

With trembling hands, she finally opened it. The words, "You are not alone," seemed to mock her. The room began to spin. She grabbed her phone to call her friend, but then hesitated. She couldn't say it aloud. Not yet.
