The moving boxes seemed to mock Amelia with their stark, cardboard grins. Empty. All of them. She'd spent three days unpacking, yet the house remained a stranger. Each creak of the floorboards felt like an accusatory whisper in the quiet, echoing rooms. A chill chased up her spine as she traced the ornate molding in the hallway, her fingers suddenly clumsy, unsure. It was too quiet.

She found the loose panel behind the bookshelf in the library by accident. The books, meticulously arranged by height and color, had always felt…wrong. Like someone else’s carefully curated collection. A faint draft brushed her cheek as she pried the panel away.

Dust motes danced in a shaft of weak sunlight. The air within the hidden space smelled of old paper and something else, something metallic that made her stomach clench. A tiny, brass key lay on a small wooden table inside. It looked…important. Amelia hesitated, the key warm in her palm, before stepping into the darkness.
