The air in the house was stagnant, thick with a sense of unease. Emily kept finding herself checking locks, double-checking windows. Every shadow seemed to twist into something menacing. The laughter she used to experience felt distant and foreign.

One day, while cleaning the kitchen, she noticed a faint outline on the wall behind the pantry. The tiles didn’t quite line up. She tapped the wall, her knuckles raw from worry.

A concealed door, disguised as part of the cabinetry, opened with a soft click, revealing a narrow flight of stairs descending into darkness. Emily felt a jolt of fear so potent she thought her legs would give way. She retreated, her hand flying to her chest.
