The constant tapping of her foot against the hardwood floor filled the otherwise silent apartment. Ava felt like her skin was buzzing. She’d spent weeks meticulously crafting the playlist for her rooftop party, envisioning fairy lights, laughter, and perfect summer evening. Noah, however, was having a massive, blow-out celebration at the beach.

She looked at the clock. Tick. Tock. Each second felt like an eternity. She kept glancing at her phone, willing it to buzz with a notification, a text, anything to break the tension. The silence was suffocating.

She wandered over to the window, the city lights blurred through a film of unshed tears. She considered texting Noah, just to wish him a happy birthday. But she couldn't. The words caught in her throat.
