The coffee tasted like ash. I tossed the cup in the overflowing trash bin, the clatter echoing in the deserted breakroom. The news, the news, it was all I could think about. A buyer? What would that mean for my team, for me?

I walked back to my desk, my pace unusually hurried. The air conditioning blasted, making me shiver despite the heat building inside me. I sat down and opened the spreadsheet I'd been working on. The numbers swam before my eyes. Everything felt... wrong, out of balance.

I glanced over at Emily's desk. She was typing furiously, her brow furrowed. I wanted to ask her what she thought, but the words wouldn't come. I simply stared at the screen, the cursor blinking, a tiny, relentless signal of the world's indifference.
