The sales meeting felt longer than usual. The presentation drones on, yet I couldn't concentrate. My thoughts kept returning to the subject in the morning's message. A sale? What would that mean for the bonuses, the commissions?

I shifted in my chair, the plastic squeaking. I felt a tight knot in my chest. I glanced at the faces of my colleagues; the same worries were reflected in their eyes. The forced smiles, the strained laughter - it all felt brittle and false.

As the meeting concluded, I quickly excused myself, hurrying down the hallway. I needed air, needed to be away from the stifling atmosphere of the room. I felt a desperate need to know what the future held.
