The air in the office felt thick, stifling to Aaron. He unbuttoned his collar, the fabric feeling tight against his neck. The prospect of the promotion made him want to bolt from the room. He felt an unusual tension gripping his shoulders. He was always confident, but this was different.

He found himself checking his phone every few minutes, anticipating the email, the phone call, the announcement. He tapped his foot, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet office. He kept going over his performance in his head, second-guessing every decision.
