The chipped mug warmed Amelia’s hands, but the chill remained in her bones. The email sat open on her laptop screen, its subject line a stark intrusion: "DNA Results." She’d half-expected this moment, and yet, the starkness of the words jolted her. She took a large gulp of tea, the liquid doing nothing to soothe the tremor in her hands. The hardwood floorboards beneath her feet seemed to creak with a newfound urgency as she debated whether or not to actually read the email.

Her gaze drifted to the framed photograph on her desk—a smiling image of her parents, taken years before her own birth. A phantom itch began to crawl up her spine. Suddenly, the familiar comfort of her cluttered apartment felt oppressive, the walls closing in. She stood up, her legs wobbly, and moved to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked city streets, the lights blurring in a way that mimicked the information swirling in her mind.
