He’d always considered himself a man of logic, but the DNA results had completely scrambled his world. John sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the confirmation. A half-sister. A person he’d never known, a piece of his history missing.

He got up and started washing the dishes in the sink, scrubbing the plates with unnecessary force. The hot water did little to soothe the tightness in his chest. He turned on the radio, looking for distraction, but the music grated on his nerves.

He felt as though he were suddenly floating, untethered from the familiar anchors of his life. He slammed the dish soap down and walked to his bedroom, flopping onto his bed and staring at the ceiling.
