The drive to her grandmother's house, a trip she usually enjoyed, felt interminable. Emily gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were white. The news about her half-brother weighed heavily on her.

The familiar landscape, rolling hills and quaint towns, seemed to mock her. She felt like an imposter, a fraud. Everything she had been told, believed, now seemed tainted. She turned up the radio, hoping the music would drown out the thoughts swirling in her mind, but it did not help.
