The discovery struck Arthur in the gut. He'd always considered himself financially secure, comfortable, even. But when he saw the private helicopter land in Ms. Eleanor's backyard, the air seemed to thicken.

He felt a tightness in his chest. His breathing became shallow. He had known Eleanor for years, the elderly woman who always volunteered at the local animal shelter. She'd always been so… humble.

Arthur retreated into his own house, feeling the walls close in. He paced the living room, hands clenching and unclenching. He needed to do something, to counteract this sensation of being diminished. He felt a sudden, burning desire to go out and buy something extravagant.
