"Did you see the new car?" Mark asked, his voice strained. He was sitting at the breakfast table, pushing scrambled eggs around his plate.

His wife, Emily, looked up, a puzzled expression on her face. "Which one? There are always new cars in that neighborhood."

"The one at the Miller's," Mark said, unable to meet her gaze. The Millers had always seemed so…ordinary. Now, a car that cost more than their house sat in their driveway.

He had difficulty swallowing. He abruptly stood up, pushing his chair back with a loud scrape. He wandered into the living room, his hands trembling slightly. He felt a vague sense of being off-kilter, everything somehow skewed.
