The antique clock on the mantelpiece ticked loudly, each second amplifying the pounding in her chest. She stood at the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, a chaotic mirror of her own inner turmoil. The world outside felt hazy, blurry at the edges.

A phone call, the caller ID unfamiliar. A hesitant voice on the other end, asking if she was "the one with the… the thing."

She’d been expecting this.

He arrived at her doorstep, a man with a nervous energy that mirrored her own. He shifted from foot to foot, avoiding eye contact. He described the doctors’ theories, the tests, the constant feeling of being disconnected.

"Do you ever feel like you're… fading?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

She nodded, her throat tight. The rain outside intensified, mirroring the growing storm within them both. They were linked, bound by something she didn't yet understand.
