The world seemed to shrink around David. He gripped the pen, his knuckles white, as he stared at the words: "Run a marathon." He knew his wife, Sarah, was training. But he’d always thought it was… a phase. Something she'd talk about, but never actually do. He felt a stab of… something he couldn’t name, a vague discontent.

He ran a hand through his hair, pacing the length of their living room. He saw her bright, running shoes by the front door, and each time he looked his breath hitched. He had never considered that she might have ambitions beyond their life together, beyond him. The house, usually so comforting, now felt vast and echoing.

He had promised to cook dinner tonight, but suddenly, the simple task felt impossible.
