He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest. John reread the first entry. "Hike the Appalachian Trail." He knew Sarah loved to hike, but he had thought it was a passing hobby, not a burning desire. He thought they were in sync, perfectly aligned, but looking at this list, he was questioning everything.

He walked to the window and stared out at the street. The world looked different, sharp, and slightly out of focus. He felt a vague unease, a constant hum in the back of his mind. He opened the window, the cool air doing little to soothe his rising anxiety.

He felt an urge to shout, to ask, but the words caught in his throat.
