The note, tucked under the door, detailed a request for a small plot for a pumpkin patch. It was the handwriting that sparked the unease, like an unwanted guest. The request, delivered through a note, felt impersonal, leaving no room for refusal. She crumbled the note, then smoothed it out, and smoothed it out again.

She went outside and examined her garden, her carefully planned arrangement. The symmetry of the landscape, usually a source of peace, now seemed…fragile. The air felt charged, as if waiting for a storm.

She took a deep breath, fighting the sudden urge to run, to escape the feeling that everything was shifting beneath her feet.
