It wasn't that she disliked change, but the abruptness of it all felt like an insult. He slammed the door to his apartment. The air felt thick, stifling. She had to get out.

She found herself wandering the city streets, unable to settle. Every corner she turned, every familiar face she saw, triggered a fresh wave of panic. She walked faster, trying to outrun the feeling, but it clung to her like a shadow.

When she got back to her apartment, she felt a strong impulse to rearrange her furniture, as if by altering the physical space, she could somehow stop the inevitable. She pushed and pulled, the effort leaving her breathless and exhausted.
