"No, no, no," Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible above the chirping of birds. Her hands, trembling, traced the outline of where her little hatchback had been. The driveway, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt vast and empty.

The feeling in her chest was like a rock, heavy and immovable. The audacity of it, she thought. She was here, in her own home, on her own property. She gripped the cold metal of the mailbox.

She would be late for work now. Again. And this was the car she used to get her grandmother to her doctors appointments. A sigh escaped her lips as she thought of the endless chain of events that were about to commence.
