He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. Liam stood frozen in his slippers, staring at the empty space where his pickup truck usually resided. A cold knot twisted in his stomach. The bright morning sun felt suddenly harsh, almost accusatory.

He’d paid the parking ticket last week, he was certain. The memory of dropping the envelope into the mailbox flashed through his mind, and now it was all in question. This was unbelievable. He felt as though the world was tilting on its axis.

He kicked a stray pebble across the driveway. The metallic gleam of the impound lot sign was a distant, cruel promise. His work tools were in the truck. His lunch. Everything. The thought of the paperwork, the phone calls, the potential fines… it was all too much.
