"Unbelievable," Daniel muttered under his breath, reading the request for the tenth time. It was from Jessica. His jaw clenched, muscles tightening. He felt a pressure building in his head, a dull ache behind his eyes. He quickly shut his laptop. It was a reflex, an urge to shut out the world.

He went to his balcony and stared at the city, the urban sprawl stretching out before him, a sea of indifferent buildings. The recollection of her cruel words, her cold dismissal of him, burned in his mind. He didn't want to think about the past. He wanted to forget the way she'd made him feel. The present felt tainted by that knowledge.
