The email notification chimed, and Chloe flinched. It was from the dreaded Michael. She almost dropped her phone. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a tightness that made it difficult to breathe. He had a lot to answer for. She could still hear his booming laughter, the sound of his sneering jokes reverberating in her mind.

She closed her eyes, trying to conjure calmness. She failed. He'd tormented her relentlessly, making her life a living misery. She had a wonderful life now; she did not want him, this symbol of her past traumas, creeping in. The thought filled her with a sense of… agitation. She really, really didn't want to respond.
