"Hey, where'd you get that pen?" I heard a casual voice behind me. I whirled around. It was Mark, my roommate, holding the pen I knew I’d left on my desk, the same pen I’d been using to write in my journal. A hot flush spread across my cheeks.

I felt a sudden, sharp pressure behind my eyes. I didn't say anything, I just looked at him, searching his face for any hint of guilt. He avoided my gaze. I wanted to yell, to accuse him, but all I could manage was a strained, "Nothing." I grabbed my backpack and headed towards the door, feeling a tremor in my legs.
