Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic drumming in Maya's chest. She clenched her fists, the knuckles turning white. Sarah, her supposed best friend, was throwing a party – a big, boisterous bash – on the very same day as Maya's quiet, intimate gathering. The invitations had gone out a week ago, a carefully curated list of close friends and family. Now, Maya’s carefully laid plans felt like they were dissolving, like sugar in the downpour outside.

Her phone buzzed. A cancellation. Another one. She threw the device onto the counter with a loud thud. The cake she’d spent all morning baking suddenly looked bland, insignificant. The decorations, once brimming with joyous anticipation, now seemed pathetic, a sad attempt at festivity.

"It's just a coincidence," her mother had said gently, trying to soothe the turmoil. But Maya knew better. Sarah knew. They'd talked about their birthdays for months. The knowledge tightened her throat, making it hard to breathe.
