The biting wind whipped at Amelia’s face as she stared across the river, the water a churning grey. Beside her, Liam shivered, pulling his jacket tighter. “You’re sure you saw the whole thing? From start to finish?” he asked, his voice barely audible above the gusts.

Amelia’s chin lifted. “Of course, I’m sure. I was the one who practically *dragged* you out of the way before the rogue wave crashed the pier. You were too busy ogling the seagulls!” A flush of heat warmed her cheeks, despite the cold.

Liam chuckled, a sound that grated on her nerves. “That's not how it happened, Amelia. I saved *you*. You were the one who froze, remember? I had to grab you and pull you back.” He looked at the water. "I just remember it being a lot more... dramatic."

A prickle of defensiveness ran down her spine. "Dramatic? I was the one who pointed out the incoming storm! I saw the danger, and I acted! You were the one mesmerized by… by…" She searched for a suitably scathing word. "By the sheer banality of the beach."
