He’d sworn he remembered it perfectly, but now, faced with his friend’s conflicting account, Marcus felt a strange pressure building behind his eyes. He’d charged into the burning building, he was certain. He remembered the smoke, the heat, the terror in the little girl's eyes. He'd gone in, and he'd saved her.

“The fire? It barely touched the second floor,” Ben was saying, casually peeling an orange. “And the girl? Her parents were already out, holding her. You were just… there. Watching.” Ben tossed the peel into the bin with a flick of his wrist.

Marcus’s jaw tightened. "I heard her screaming. I saw her hand. You couldn't even see the smoke! You were outside, yelling at the firemen! I was *inside*." His voice was low, and a knot of fury tightened his stomach.

Ben shrugged, completely unfazed. “Hey, if you say so. Memory is a funny thing, right? Maybe you imagined it." He offered the orange. "Want a segment?"
