My palms were sweating, even though the gymnasium was freezing. I could feel the thrum of anticipation vibrating in my chest as Coach Davis clapped his hands to gather everyone's attention. I knew what was coming. The cuts.

He started with the easy ones, the players who knew it was coming. They took their dismissal with a stiff upper lip, a quick handshake, and a rapid exit. I watched them go, each departure a fresh stab of guilt.

My name, thankfully, remained unsaid. But I couldn't help but notice the way Maria, a freshman with genuine fire, was fidgeting, her gaze darting from the coach to the floor. I knew she was a fighter.

When her name was called, the look in her eyes – a mixture of shock and hurt – was enough to jolt me into action. I made my way towards her, and I heard my own voice, clear and loud, challenging the coach’s decision. I couldn't bear to let her go without a fight.
