The setting sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the dusty baseball diamond. Coach Thompson had gathered us after a brutal tryout week. We all knew some of us wouldn’t make the cut. It was a brutal reality of the sport.

The air was tight with unspoken tension. As he reeled off the names, I tracked the faces, looking for any clue, any hint of who would be spared and who would be sent home. My own heart was drumming like a snare drum.

One after another, players heard their fate. Then, Coach Thompson paused. He looked at young David, a kid who had hustled day in and day out, never giving up. I felt a surge of… something… when David’s name wasn’t called.

But then, he gestured to David. “I think you need to take some time and hone your skills.” I saw David’s face collapse. Without thinking, I walked over to the coach, I had to speak up. "Coach, maybe we can give him a second chance?"
