The silence felt deafening. Kevin clenched his fists. Across from him, Jessica was staring blankly at the floor. "We'll be fine," he said, the words coming out more like a command than a reassurance. "I know how to handle this."

He moved to the control panel and began to examine it closely. He knew the building's maintenance staff. He knew what to expect. He knew the layout of the electrical system. He would be the one to solve this.

He started pulling at the panel, ignoring the sharp sting in his shoulder from an old injury. He worked at the wires, trying to remember what he had learned in that one engineering class, his mind whirring. He would not fail.

He heard Jessica take a shaky breath. This added fuel to his efforts.
