The sharp odor of pine filled the air. She’d been watching the tree, a towering pine that had always seemed to defy the elements, for years. It was a menace, but still…she never thought it would actually fall.

The crash had shaken the house, making her jump. She immediately grabbed her phone, dialing the fire department. Then, something within her stirred, a compelling need to take action.

She ran out into the gale-force winds, her hair whipping across her face. The neighbor’s car was trapped under a mass of branches and needles. She scrambled toward the house, calling out, praying they were okay. This was not a time to hesitate.
