The sound of the limb snapping echoed in his ears, a thunderclap in the wake of the actual thunder. He didn't think; he reacted. He grabbed his heavy-duty work gloves and the axe from the shed.

His neighbor’s sprawling willow had succumbed to the onslaught, leaving their driveway inaccessible. He marched toward the fallen tree. He was prepared. He was ready to clear the path.

The rain plastered his clothes to his skin. He started chopping at the smaller branches, his muscles beginning to ache. He would stay here, no matter how long it took.
