The biting wind whipped at Elara's cloak as she navigated the snow-covered mountain path. Her chest heaved with each step, the thin air a constant challenge. She gripped the rough-hewn staff tightly, her knuckles white. She had volunteered, practically insisted, on being the one to deliver the serum to the isolated village. Every fiber of her being urged her onward, regardless of the physical strain. The villagers were counting on her.

A figure emerged from the blizzard, a man stumbling and disoriented. He clutched his side, his face contorted in pain. “Help…” he rasped, his voice barely audible above the howling wind. Elara recognized the symptoms. She had felt them. A burning sensation, a strange hollowness.

“You… you have the condition?” she managed, her voice cracking. He nodded weakly. They shared a knowing glance, a connection forged in shared vulnerability, a shared urgency. With renewed determination, she pulled a vial from her pack and, fighting through the freezing cold, helped him administer the first dose.
