The digital file on the tablet glowed in the dim bedroom. Alex hadn't meant to invade his partner's privacy, but the curiosity had been too strong. The first few pages were a revelation; the "Alex" in the novel was a warrior.

He felt the blood coursing through his veins.

His first impulse had been rage, a stinging sense of betrayal. But as he continued reading, a different emotion took hold. The "Alex" in the story was a hero, fighting through battles that mirrored his own life.

He knew what he had to do. He would go to him, share with him, and embrace the shared reality they had unknowingly created. He had always been the stronger one. He had always known he would prevail.

He was the hero of his own story.
