He watched the new guy, Mark, struggle with the coffee machine. It sputtered, coughed, and finally produced a lukewarm, watery brew. Perfect. He’d made sure to "forget" to show Mark the secret to a decent cup.

"It's a tricky beast, isn't it?" John said, his voice laced with a subtle amusement. He’d spent years perfecting the machine’s quirks and now, it was someone else's problem.

John found a comfortable vantage point near the window and observed Mark try to figure out what was wrong. The morning sun was warming the window, the cold spreading through the office. He felt the cold in his chest.
