The dinner party was meant to be fun. It wasn't. Sophia, the "famous novelist," was currently holding forth on the inspiration for her latest bestseller. It was a well-rehearsed act. Mark knew the truth. He'd seen her scribbling grocery lists in a notebook.

Mark leaned forward, a polite smile plastered on his face. "Sophia, darling, that's fascinating. Tell me, how much research did you do?" He then spent the next hour peppering her with questions about the supposed research, slowly, methodically exposing the gaps in her knowledge. The other guests were soon looking at her with a new, critical eye.
