The smell of lavender and decay clung to Leo. He stood in the sun-drenched garden, the roses overgrown and tangled, much like their relationship. He knew exactly what he was going to do.

He had arrived first, hours before his sister, Sofia. The keys were in his hand. He walked into the house, picturing her face when she saw what he'd done. He had the power now, the upper hand.

He had already emptied their grandmother’s safe. The contents were safely stowed away, ready to be dispersed to the places they should have been. The gold watches, the family heirlooms, all gone. The house itself was next.

He watched the front gate for Sofia's car, an odd lightness filling his chest. He felt like a coiled spring, ready to release. She’d always been so… entitled. This was perfect.
