The photograph – a grinning, carefree teenager – stared back at David from the invitation. He slammed the card onto his desk, the force dislodging a pen that rolled across the polished surface. He spent the past twenty years as a software developer, but his life had never lived up to the promise the photograph seemed to show.

His fingers clenched, and he pictured all the times he'd been dismissed, belittled, ignored. He imagined their faces when he unveiled the project he'd been working on in his spare time, a groundbreaking program that would change the world. They’d all be sorry, he thought, a slow smile creeping across his lips.
