“It’s just gathering dust,” said his elder sister, her voice sharp. She gestured towards the ornate grandfather clock that stood majestically in the hallway. “We need to be practical.”

He felt the blood drain from his face. The clock, passed down through generations, had chimed the hours of his entire life. To think of it gone, sold to some stranger…

He masked his emotions, offered a weak smile. He’d learned to play the waiting game, to plan carefully. His sister was a fool if she thought this would be simple.
