The injustice burned. Maria had poured her heart and soul into her studies, and now, someone else, someone from a wealthy family, was getting the financial boost she deserved. She tasted ash in her mouth.

Her first act was a calculated one. She found out where the other student, Emily Carter, volunteered. Maria started signing up for the same shifts, watching Emily, studying her.

One day, while working at the soup kitchen, she made sure Emily's assigned task was a messy one, and then subtly suggested Emily take a different route out of the building. The resulting mud and the public embarrassment were deeply satisfying.
